Nigel McBride (b. 1990) is a composer currently based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Formerly a research student at Magdalen College, Oxford, Nigel studied composition with Professor Robert Saxton, and was supervised by Professor Jason Stanyek, looking at aesthetics and philosophy in die Reihe. He previously studied for a M.St in Music (Composition) at St. Anne's College, Oxford, where he obtained a Distinction. Prior to studying at Oxford University, Nigel studied composition with Prof. Piers Hellawell at The Queen's University, Belfast, where he graduated with First Class Honours. His music has been performed across the UK, Germany, the Darmstadt Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Spectrum in New York City, and elsewhere in the USA.
Compositional interests are diverse and varied; much recent work has focused on examining different ways in which abstract musical material can be structured, using processes that are artificially devised, historically informed, or derived from natural phenomenon.
Nigel is co-founder and former artistic director of OxLOrk (the Oxford University Laptop Orchestra), and founder and curator of the Composers' Forum seminars, held at Magdalen College.
